Carol Burnett said, “Only I can change my life. No one can do it for me.” And while this is true, there’s nothing wrong with getting a little bit of help. A life coach is someone who guides you to become the best version of yourself. They help you to achieve your goals, be they fitness, career or relationship oriented. But how do they do this and what exactly will you need to do during a life coaching session?
What is expected if you
Open up (Speak)
It is nearly impossible to help someone if you know nothing about them. Therefore, if you want your life coaching sessions to be successful, you need to open up. And not just superficially. You need to be an open book about everything from your innermost secrets to your life’s ambitions. Guaranteed, it won’t be easy. It’s difficult to bare everything to someone you don’t know. But it will be so worth it when your life coach helps you achieve all you dream to achieve.
Look for inspiration and motivation (Listen)
Life coaches specifically study and train to inspire and motivate you to reach your goals and ambitions. Your coach will help you set goals, modify behaviours and overcome obstacles.
A life coach must not be confused with a psychologist. While the two are indeed very similar, a psychologist will work on remedying specific behavioural issues that the client wants to work through in their lives so that these patterns of behaviour do not recur. You need to draw inspiration from your life coach. Listen for that which sets your heart on fire:
- If you have goals that you’re just not reaching, your coach will help you reach them.
- If your current career path isn’t turning out the way you want it to, your life coach will work with you to develop a plan to help you change this.
- If you lack the motivation to get fit, and this is what you really want to do, your life coach will plot a route to get you to achieving your fitness goals.
And if your life coach does not inspire or motivate you, then you should probably find a different life coach.
Get the tools you need to succeed (Do)
Stop dreaming of a better life and start doing something to obtain it. If you’ve opened up to your life coach, then they would have helped you come up with a plan. If your life coach has motivated and inspired you, you will have the will to pursue the plan. But if you stop there, the whole exercise has been futile. Your life coach should equip you with the tools you need to reach your goals or get out of that rut.
All life coaches will have a number of tools and exercises at their disposal that will help you reach your goals and aspirations.
One of the most powerful is the Wheel of Life. In this exercise, the coach will ask their client to draw a circle and divide it into eight segments:
- Friends and Family
- Romantic partner
- Personal Growth
- Home Environment
In each of these segments, they will ask the client to draw a line and number it from one to 10. The client will then need to grade each of these areas of their lives and, once this is done, will need to connect the dots. The more irregular the circle is, the more life coaching work needs to be done.
This is a great tool to measure your progress during your work with your life coach. There are so many others that they will be able to give you. So, make sure you get the tools you need to succeed from your coach and start doing!
